What is DNS propagation?
Whenever you change your domain's nameservers, the update has to reflect across the internet. This process usually takes 24–48 hours and is called DNS propagation.
Why does it take so long?
Internet Service Providers worldwide cache a copy of your domain’s DNS so your site loads faster on repeat visits. When you change nameservers, that cache is not cleared instantly — each ISP has to expire its copy and fetch the fresh record.
Can I speed it up?
There is no way to force propagation. To minimise downtime, upload your site to the new server first, then add DNS records in your existing zone (on the old server) to point visitors at the new server — that takes effect faster than a nameserver change. Once traffic is flowing to the new server you can switch nameservers any time.
How do I know propagation is complete?
There is no perfectly reliable tracker — a Whois, ping or traceroute won’t confirm it. Tools like WhatsMyDNS give a rough regional picture. In practice, make your change, then wait a day or two (up to 48 hours) and it will settle.
How do I add MX records in Plesk?
Make sure your domain already points to your hosting nameservers. Then in Plesk: expand the Advanced section → DNS Settings → Add Record → set type to MX → leave Mail domain/Host blank → enter the MX server value → set the priority → click OK. If Plesk warns "Changes not saved yet", click "Update".
How do I delete MX records in Plesk?
In DNS Settings, tick the box next to the MX record → click "Remove" → tick "Confirm removal" → OK. If prompted that changes aren’t saved, click "Update". Allow a couple of hours for propagation.
How do I change my domain nameservers?
Log into your Domain Control Panel, open the domain, go to the "Name Servers" option under Domain Registration, replace the entries with your host’s nameservers and save. Allow 24–48 hours for propagation.
